second grade overview

This grade is where students become adept at reading, writing, and using logic across all subjects. They will become more confident about their abilities to hold conversations, communicate their thoughts, and use creativity to solve simple problems.

LANGUAGE ARTS

Students fine-tune their literacy skills.  A true milestone here is reading chapter books by the end of the year.  We utilize the STAR Testing system to monitor our class progress and individual growth. Spelling skills are honed (over 35 tests!) and fluency of reading is reached.

MATHEMATICS

At year’s end, they will be able to add or subtract ANY NUMBER in the world (beyond the 100s and 1000s). Mastery of money, time, and shapes round out curriculum.

RELIGION

Second grade students will strengthen their relationship with God and the Church in preparation for the sacraments of Reconciliation and the Eucharist.

Second Grade thrives on adventure!  We take in a play at the Luther Burbank Center for the Arts; visit Spring Lake in the fall to learn about the habitats of our wildlife; take a trip to the San Francisco Zoo for docent-led excursion; tour Snoopy’s Home Ice to learn about ice-skating and the history of Peanuts Creator Charles Schulz; walking field trip to the Dollar Tree to utilize our money skills honed in class; walking trip to the Post Office and the blue mailbox after writing and addressing a letter to a special friend!
